DVLA Regulations

All number plates sold for use on UK roads must comply with the rules set by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Key requirements include:

Characters: Must use the mandatory Charles Wright 2001 font — no italics, no stylised fonts.
Spacing: Character and group spacing must meet exact DVLA specifications
Colour: White reflective background for front plates; yellow reflective background for rear plates.
Registration mark: Must display the correct, unaltered registration as recorded with the DVLA.
Supplier details: Every plate must show the name and postcode of the supplier and the British Standard number.

Plates that do not meet these requirements are illegal for road use and may result in a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT failure.

BSAU145e British Standard

BSAU145e is the current British Standard for retroreflective number plates. It replaced BSAU145d and sets strict requirements for:

Retroreflectivity: The plate must reflect light clearly at night to be visible to other road users and speed cameras.
Durability: Materials must withstand weathering, UV exposure, and physical wear without fading or peeling.
Legibility: Characters must remain clearly readable throughout the life of the plate.
Construction: The plate substrate, reflective sheeting, and printed characters must all meet defined performance thresholds.

All plates supplied by A1 Number Plates UK are manufactured using BSAU145e-compliant materials and processes. Our plates carry the British Standard mark and our supplier details as required by law.

What Makes a Plate Road-Legal?

A road-legal number plate must meet all of the following criteria:

✅ Correct Charles Wright 2001 font — no alterations
✅ Correct character sizing and spacing to DVLA specification
✅ White reflective front / Yellow reflective rear
✅ Manufactured to BSAU145e standard
✅ Supplier name, postcode, and BS number printed on the plate
✅ No flags, symbols, or badges that obscure the registration
✅ Registration matches DVLA records exactly

Optional legal additions include the GB identifier, national flags (England, Scotland, Wales), and the Union Flag — provided they are displayed in the correct position and do not interfere with the registration characters.

UK Manufactured

Every plate we produce is made in the UK using British Standard-compliant materials. We do not import pre-made plates. Manufacturing in the UK means we maintain full quality control at every stage — from the reflective substrate to the final printed characters — so you receive a plate that is genuinely road-legal, not just marketed as such.

Delivery

We aim to dispatch all orders within 1–2 working days. Standard delivery typically arrives within 2–4 working days after dispatch. All plates are packaged securely to prevent damage in transit. If your plate arrives damaged, please contact us within 48 hours and we will arrange a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my plate pass an MOT?

Yes — provided the registration is correct and the plate is in good condition, our plates are manufactured to meet MOT inspection requirements.

Can I use a 4D or gel plate on the road?

Yes. 4D acrylic and gel character plates are road-legal provided the characters use the correct font, sizing, and spacing, and the plate is manufactured to BSAU145e. All our 4D and gel plates meet these requirements.

Do I need to provide proof of entitlement?

Yes. Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, number plate suppliers are required to verify your entitlement to the registration before supplying a plate. We will ask for a copy of your V5C logbook (or other accepted document) and photo ID when you order.

What if I have a personalised registration?

Personalised registrations are treated the same as standard registrations. As long as the registration is legally assigned to your vehicle via the DVLA, we can produce a compliant plate for it.

Can I get a plate for a show or display vehicle?

Show plates (not for road use) have different rules. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and we will advise accordingly.
